New MPS Leader Will Face Dire Financial Outlook

A new report by the Public Policy Forum in Milwaukee details the district’s dire financial picture. Forum President Rob Henken says MPS faces flat revenues, but rising costs.

Unlike many private schools, only a few MPS high schools brag of active alumni associations that do more than track reunions.

The exceptions include Washington and Marshall.

For instance, at Sunday's graduation, the Marshall High School Alumni Association will award another round of scholarships.  It will also, as it does annually, honor a former faculty member, while an outstanding 'alum' of the year will deliver the keynote to this year's graduating seniors.

The time of transition continues in Milwaukee Public Schools.  The state’s largest school district is looking for a new superintendent after the announcement earlier this year that Gregory Thornton is leaving to run the public school system in Baltimore.

Gregory Thornton, who’s served as superintendent of the state’s largest school district since 2010, is stepping down from his post.

MPS has moved a step closer to selling its vacant Malcolm X school building to a developer. A Common Council committee gave the nod Wednesday.
