Wisconsin to Stop Enforcing $10,000 Overall Campaign Limit

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down how much donors can give to multiple candidates, Wisconsin plans to stop enforcing its $10,000 limit.

The state Dept. of Justice released its plan Thursday, as part of a settlement with donor Fred Young. He had challenged Wisconsin's overall limit, in federal court in Milwaukee.

State law had prohibited donors from giving more than $10,000 a year to all candidates. The Justice Dept. says its plan to stop enforcing that law, will bring Wisconsin into line with a recent Supreme Court decision.

Last month, the high court ruled that the government cannot limit how much people can give to multiple candidates and to political committees.
