Food Stamp Recipients Await Cuts

People in Wisconsin receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance will soon see smaller payments. In fact, starting tomorrow – Friday.

The changes are due to federal stimulus funding sun setting. For several years during the recession, the federal government provided a bit more food aid to people in need. The current maximum for a single person is $200 a month, but starting November 1st, that amount will drop by $11. Maureen Fitzgerald is director of advocacy for the Hunger Task Force. She says the cuts are just the beginning.

“They’re talking additional cuts in the farm bill, it’s a $40 billion cut to the SNAP program. Some of those cuts would impact Wisconsin more greatly than any other state because of the eligibility rules here in Wisconsin.

Across Wisconsin, more than 850,000 people receive what have long been called, food stamps.
