The Democratic Party of Wisconsin has filed a federal lawsuit against legislation limiting the powers of Wisconsin’s governor and attorney general. Wisconsin Democrats say the only reason Republicans, who control both the state Senate and the Assembly, passed legislation taking away powers traditionally reserved for the governor and attorney general is because the GOP lost.
Martha Laning chairs the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. She says Wisconsin’s new laws make it hard to believe in the Democratic process.
“The gerrymandered legislature is going to strip you of the ability to take the action that you have been campaigning on, it’s hurting us as a party,” Laning says.
Laning says right now, Republicans in Wisconsin are ignoring the will of the people to withdraw from the lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act and to expand Medicaid here.
Lawsuits against the so-called lame-duck legislation have also been filed by some Wisconsin labor unions and the League of Women Voters, Disability Rights Wisconsin and Black Leaders Organizing for Wisconsin Communities.
