Milwaukee is often called a city of neighborhoods - and with good reason. By some estimates there are more than a hundred distinct neighborhoods in the city, each with their own unique culture and community traditions.
LISTEN: One Question, Lots of Answers: How Are Milwaukee Neighborhoods Named?
But when it comes to talking about the city's “hottest” neighborhoods, Milwaukeeans tend to rely on some familiar favorites.
"You're always going to get some of the more popular areas," says writer Claire Swinarski, whose piece on the city's best up-and-coming neighborhoods was featured in this month’s Milwaukee Magazine.
Areas like Bay View or the Third Ward get a lot of attention, but Swinarski identified five up-and-coming neighborhoods that have a lot to offer both residents and visitors. "I was looking for areas that have great things to offer for citizens of Milwaukee and Milwaukee families, without necessarily being those ones that always come up in conversation."
The list includes: Silver City, Fernwood, Lindsay Heights, Havenwoods and Brewers Hill. The neighborhoods come from all parts of the city, some downtown (like Brewers Hill) with others straddle the outskirts (like Havenwoods).
