Democratic state Sen. Bob Jauch has served in the Legislature since 1982. His biggest cause in recent times has been fighting eased rules for mining.

Jauch announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election next year. He has represented a section of northwestern Wisconsin in the Senate since 1986, after serving two terms in the Assembly.

The 67-year-old has battled Republican efforts to streamline the permitting process for Gogebic Taconite, the company that wants to mine iron ore just south of Lake Superior, in the Penokee Hills. Jauch represents the district.

Jauch was also among the Democratic senators who left the state in 2011, to block a vote on Gov. Walker's Act 10, the bill eliminating many public union rights.
