Judge Continues Ban on New Wisconsin Abortion Rule

A federal judge has told Wisconsin, it cannot enforce a new rule on abortion providers, at least until August 8. The rule requires them to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.

Judge William Conley initially blocked the new requirement on July 17 - while he decides whether to issue a preliminary injunction against the law, preceding a trial over its legality in November.

However, Conley says he feared some people thought his temporary order expired on July 31, so he has extended it until August 8. He expects to issue his ruling before then.

Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Services are suing Wisconsin over its new abortion requirement, insisting it interferes with a woman's right to have an abortion.
