County Leaders At Odds Over Courthouse Security

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele and Sheriff David Clarke Jr. have different notions about how to improve security at Milwaukee County Courthouse entrances.

The issue of security at the Milwaukee County Courthouse is grabbing attention.

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele will unveil his 2014 budget proposal today.

Abele’s budget includes an increase of $10 million in new and repurposed public safety funding. Changes include a call for new x-ray equipment at Courthouse entrances. The County Exec will  renew a call for to turn over park security duties to the Milwaukee Police department.

Changes recommended for Courthouse security are not likely to satisfy Sheriff David Clarke Jr.

Clarke’s office wants an 11-member full time security unit of armed deputies that would staff entrances. The unit would cost $1 million in 2014.
