Another Blast of Heat Heading to Wisconsin

The forecast indicates very warm weather will return from Sunday through Tuesday, with highs around 90. The heat index could be in the upper 90s.

State emergency management officials are urging residents to take precautions, in order to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. They’re suggesting people stay inside air conditioned buildings such as senior centers and other designated cooling centers, and to check on elderly and isolated neighbors.

Ten people have died this summer from confirmed and probable heat-related issues.

Officials say there are number of tips that can help you stay safe:

  • Never leave any person or pet in a car, even briefly. In hot conditions, it can just take a couple of minutes for temperatures to become life threatening
  • Slow down or limit physical activity, especially during daylight hours
  • If you don’t have air conditioning and the temperature is hotter than 95 degrees, use fans to blow hot air out of the window
  • Drink plenty of water before you get thirsty; avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing; use a hat or umbrella to cover your head
  • Take a cool shower or bath. It can cool you off more quickly than an air conditioner will. Use cold, wet towels on your head, neck and limbs to cool off
