Unbeknownst to many in the city, UW-Milwaukee's art history department holds a significant number of original prints by the Russian Jewish artist Marc Chagall.

Those works intrigued master's student Cassie Sacotte, whose thesis project "The Morals of Marc Chagall" is now hanging in UWM's Art History Gallery.

Almost three dozen original etchings and lithographs comprise the exhibition, which will be on display through December 12th.

Sacotte says the pieces show what drove Chagall's artistic ambitions.

"He’s not very interested in trying to dictate an acceptable moral code to his audience – he’s not interested in moralizing his audience," she says. "But he’s very interested in portraying human nature at its core."

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday.
