Menominee Tell Governor They Meet His Requirements for a Kenosha Casino

Gov. Walker says he'll likely announce by Friday, whether he approves or denies the development of a Hard Rock casino at the former Dairyland Greyhound Park.

The governor met with Menominee leaders on Wednesday morning. They report telling him they meet all three of his demands, including that all 11 tribes in the state support a casino in Kenosha. Two tribes have stated opposition, but the Menominee say they have tacit support for the project because of the gaming compacts each tribe has signed with the state.

Planners say the $800 million casino and entertainment complex would create hundreds of jobs and improve the lives of impoverished Menominee members. The Potawatomi and Ho-Chunk say a Kenosha casino would harm their gambling venues in Wisconsin.

The governor has also insisted that a new casino not increase net gaming in the state. According to the Menominee, they would close one of their two existing casinos, if they could build in Kenosha.
