Nothing cuts through the cold dreariness of mid-February like a reminder to spread hope and kindness in the world. February 17 is Random Acts of Kindness Day – so take inspiration from this week’s stories and invest more in the humanity of others!
Our first teller is a Milwaukee transplant who isn’t afraid to seek deeper meaning in the monuments and symbols that define this city. Nakia H. is originally from North Carolina, where local and regional history is filled with Confederate memorials, as he told the audience at the "Milwaukee Monumental" StorySlam in May. In searching out what memorials might exist that show the historical diversity and strength of Milwaukee, there was plenty about The Bronze Fonz but little about Bronzeville. As a teacher, Nakia is committed to introducing his students to new perspectives and more soul-filling versions of local history.
Our second storyteller is youth minister Rick K., who shared a tale of regret-turned-serendipity at the "Caught in the Act" StorySlam in November. When one of the young men in his ministry program invited Rick and another minister to his bachelor party, the older men devised a game plan: stay for a few beers and a game of cards, then leave before the debauchery began. But when the ministers became the only sober drivers, they agreed to take the group to a “sports bar” to watch the game. The only problem? That sports bar was actually a strip club – the last place anyone would think divine intervention would happen.
