Gloria Rodriguez Kappel: A Life of Song and Friendship Celebrated

S Bence

Six years ago – almost to the date - we shared a story about Milwaukee’s Romany Singers. In the 1940s and 50s they were a popular ensemble of teenage girls and young women.

We re-air the story in honor of the Romany’s founder – Gloria Rodriguez Kappel.

The Milwaukee native was a longtime vocal instructor at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Kappel just celebrated her 100th birthday with some of her "girls."

The ones you heard are: Arla Liebsch, Audrey Sorenson, Estella Anderson and Mary Ann Beaumount.

A dozen Romany Singers still get together regularly.
