Marquette University Names UWM's Lovell as President

UWM

Michael Lovell, the current chancellor of UW-Milwaukee, will become the first lay leader in Marquette’s 133-year history.

Lovell succeeds Interim Marquette President Robert A. Wild.

“As a devout Catholic, my faith has always served as the cornerstone of my life,” Lovell said in a written statement. “Having the ability to openly share my faith in my professional career is something that I have always wanted to do. I am truly humbled and excited to become part of the Marquette family at this historic moment.”

In the statement, Lovell also said he would work hard to strengthen and build partnerships between UWM and Marquette to help address Milwaukee’s problems and drive growth in the region.

During Lovell’s tenure at UWM, he oversaw an ongoing $240 million capital construction and renovation program, including the new Innovation Campus in Wauwatosa and the expansion of the School of Freshwater Sciences. Prior to joining UWM, Lovell served as associate dean for research at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Engineering.

Lovell will take office at Marquette on August 1.
