Items on Milwaukee Teachers Union Wish List for 2014 MPS Budget

LaToya Dennis

The union is pleased the proposed budget for Milwaukee Public Schools adds art, music and physical education teachers but says students deserve more.

The district also needs to add librarians - so every school has one, and school buildings that serve neighborhoods according to Bob Peterson, president of the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association.

As for teachers, Peterson says MPS should create incentive plans, such as a compensation pathway to encourage staff and reward those who earn extra certifications or degrees, in areas of need.

Peterson says the existing budget proposal does not include "enough money to do what Milwaukee children deserve."

The plan cuts administration costs by nearly three percent or $31 million.

The Milwaukee School Board invites the public to comment on the 2014-2015 school budget, Thursday night, at the MPS administration building on 52nd and Vliet.
