Great Lakes Water Levels Rose Sharply in 2013

Lake Michigan is up nearly a foot, lifting it from its lowest level since record-keeping began in 1918. Scientists credit heavy rain and snow.

Despite the increase in water levels in the five Great Lakes this year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is not declaring an end to the plummet the system has experienced during the last 15 years.

The levels of Lakes Michigan and Huron have experienced the steepest declines since the late 1990's - the two are connected. Federal scientists predict the two lakes will remain well-below their historic levels, in upcoming months. Lakes Superior, Erie and Ontario are expected to remain slightly-below their average.
