Malina Saval wasn't satisfied with the easy archetypes — nerd, jock, troublemaker — people turn to when talking about teenage boys. She interviewed about 30 boys to find out who they are and what they think about themselves for her book, The Secret Lives Of Boys.
Based on her interviews, Saval outlines a variety of complicated types of boy, from "The Mini-Adult" to "The Gay, Vegan, Hearing-Impaired Republican," as well as "The Rich Kid," "The Teenage Dad," and "The Sheltered One." And each one, she writes, has a secret.
