Author and Radio Host Michael Perry Offers Snapshots of Wisconsin Life in New Book

Michael Perry

Wisconsin writer Michael Perry's past books have told the story of his time as an EMT around the small town of New Auburn, Wis.; his adventures in raising chickens, and two daughters; and his friendship with a unique, cannon-building neighbor in western Wisconsin.

His latest book is a collection of essays, some of which are reminiscent of his work in those earlier books, and all of which are cause to pause and reflect on life in the upper Midwest.

The book, called From the Top: Brief Transmissions from Tent Show Radio, was culled from short monologues included on the syndicated radio show he hosts from the Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield and from his regular column in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Perry says these brief stories are perfect for readers short on time - even if it was hard for the writer.

"Their 600 to 800 words, and you have to find some way to put a ribbon on it," he says. "So it has been a challenge - it's been one of those nice challenges."

Perry will be doing a reading and book signing at Volume One Gallery and The Local Store in Eau Claire on Saturday afternoon.

The book is published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Perry lives in rural western Wisconsin, and stopped by after a recent reading at the Firemen’s Hall in Ixonia.
