High Hopes for Businesses Catering to Same-Sex Weddings in Wisconsin

There’s lots of buzz surrounding same-sex marriage in Wisconsin. Organizers of an LGBTwedding expo in Wauwatosa hope it carries over to their event.

Organizers of the Wisconsin LGBT Wedding Expo had already planned their event before a U.S. Supreme Court decision cleared the way for same-sex marriage to become legal here. But that decision - or non-decision, really - provides a new context for tomorrow's expo.

The event was organized by the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Executive Director Jason Rae chats with Lake Effect's Mitch Teich about the landscape for gay and lesbian weddings here.

"It’s an expensive industry. When you look at everything – it’s a venue hall, it’s the ceremony, it’s the caterer – all of a sudden it’s a couple thousands of dollars right here that couples are having to spend," Rae says. "And with marriage equality, we’re actually going to see a lot more revenue generated here in Wisconsin."

The Wisconsin LGBT Wedding Expowill take place Thursday, November 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Radisson Milwaukee West by Mayfair Mall.
