Renaissance Theaterworks Takes On Tolstoy In One Man Show
Tomorrow night, one of Milwaukee’s most celebrated actors does something he’s never done before – a one-man show.
Jim Pickering stars in The Kreutzer Sonata, an adaptation of Tolstoy’s novella.
The latest production by Milwaukee’s Renaissance Theaterworks includes live orchestral music that follows and responds to the narrator of the show caught in a tale of jealousy and murder. Founding member Marie Kohler directs the production and Jill Anna Ponasik is music director. They joined Lake Effect's Bonnie North in the studio to share more about the production.
"[Tolstoy] believes in democracy, he believes in freedom, he believes in equality of rights. And yet, he's traditional and feels that there's a loss when individuals go to the most modern interpretation of their rights...you get a sense of that in this play. It's as if Tolstoy knows both sides of the coin - that it's right that women should have rights, and yet he wants it this way," Kohler said.
The Kreuzer Sonata opens tomorrow night at the Broadway Theater Center in Milwaukee’s 3rd Ward.
