Last week was a big one for the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. The school was designated a top research institution, and the UWM physics team was among the researchers credited with proving the existence of gravitational waves. And the Peck School of the Arts played host to political theater -the sixth Democratic debate, which was broadcast nationally from the Helen Bader Concert Hall at the Zelazo Center for the Arts.
Scott Emmons, dean of the Peck School gave his thoughts on the schools progress just ahead of the debate. It’s been two years since UWM celebrated its Year of the Arts, and Emmons says a lot has transpired since then. The school is teaching students how to use their creativity in more ways than one.
"What we need to do is to show them that there are many ways to use art skills to solve other problems in the world." Emmons continued, "Our faculty can show through leadership and their research what some of these possibilities are."
Although politics isn't a part of the Peck School usual lineup of performances and showcases, the school is will continue to host programs that interest the community.
"The community has been very supportive of the UWM and especially Peck School programs," says Emmons. "They see the value of how we interface with the community."
While the debate took place on a blustery, winter night, we wanted to share a song by Peck School graduate, Nick Brightwell, called "A Sunny Day in Milwaukee." Brightwell came to the UWM Peck School guitar program all the way from New Zealand, and visited us in 2013, just before he graduated.
