Radio Chipstone: 'The Way of the Warrior'

It’s been 33 years, and Russell Panczenko is retiring. The Director and Chief Curator of the Chazen Museum in Madison has worked hard during these past three decades to make the museum a welcoming place for town and gown.

But getting patron in the door has sometimes been a challenge. So Panczenko decided to go out with a bang. Samurai: The Way of the Warrior is a collection "of more than ninety objects including armor, swords, saddles, and lacquered objects" from the Museo Stibbert in Florence, Italy.

In this edition of Radio Chipstone, Panczenko tells contributor gianofer fields that this kind of exhibit appeals to a wide audience. He hopes that audience will ask more questions about Japanese history, and explore some of the other objects in the Chazen’s collection like the 4,500 plus Japanese prints and growing ceramic collection:

Material culture contributor Gianofer Fields curates the Radio Chipstone series. The project is funded by the Chipstone Foundation, a decorative arts foundation whose mission is preserving and interpreting their collection, as well as stimulating research and education in the decorative arts.
