Between this season’s political debates, political ads, campaign rallies and other events, candidates for office have made a lot of claims over the past few months. And that doesn’t include President Donald Trump, who's weighed in on everything from House and Senate races to managerial decisions in the World Series.
Needless to say, it has been a busy few months for Angie Holan, who leads a team that evaluates a lot of statements from public figures. Holan is the editor of PolitiFact, the national fact-checking organization that partners with local news outlets like the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Holan says PolitiFact's work isn't just important during an election year, but at all times, to keep politicians accountable for their claims.
She says, "For me, as a journalist, there’s something really important about just stating the truth. Just saying that what the politicians are saying is not accurate, we’re documenting why, and here it is. It’s for people who are interested in the truth. It’s for posterity. It’s because that’s what we do as journalists — we tell the truth."
