For a basketball team that’s only won one world championship, the Milwaukee Bucks have featured quite a few legends of the game on the court. Players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Moses Malone and Ray Allen truly put the fear in those who faced the Milwaukee deer.
While the current generation of basketball fans might know those names, a recent longform ESPN documentary tells the story of basketball in the United States through firsthand accounts from many of these former players. A companion book of the same name, Basketball: A Love Story, takes the conversation a step further. Rafe Bartholomew, co-author of the book, says it explores the history of basketball in a way it hasn't been explored before.
He says, "Being able to look at what feels like the Dead Sea Scrolls of basketball — all this accumulated wisdom from generations of men, women, young and old who played the game — it’s powerful stuff to see those raw words on the printed page."
