Final Court Ruling: Elmbrook Schools Cannot Hold Graduation in a Church

For years, Brookfield Central and Brookfield East high schools held their graduation ceremonies in Elmbrook Church, because of its large size.

Several parties sued, insisting the venue violated the separation of church and state.

In 2012, federal appeals court in Chicago agreed, stating that the religious symbols adorning the church during graduation conveyed a message that government was endorsing a particular religion.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court let the appeals court decision stand.

Elmbrook no longer holds its graduation ceremonies at the church.
