Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Tony Evers Would Make Education Top Priority

Tony Evers

Perhaps you've seen ads in the race for governor, from the Democrats hoping to take on Republican Gov. Scott Walker, or from special interest groups.  Maybe you've been bombarded with mailings and robocalls in the days leading up to the Aug. 14 primary.

But if you were able to spend a few minutes with each candidate, what's the key message he or she would want you to take away from that conversation?  WUWM's Marti Mikkelson asked that question of all eight Democrats. In the coming days, we'll hear from all of them, in alphabetical order.

Our first chat is with state School Superintendent Tony Evers.  He says education is his top priority.

Why are you running for governor?

Evers:  I want to build a strong Wisconsin.

What are the top three issues facing Wisconsinites and how do you plan to address them?

Evers:  1. Education — I'll increase funding for K-12 and make sure funding is distributed more fairly.

2. Natural resources —I'll create a different Department of Natural Resources; one that values science.

3. Transportation system — We have to find a better way to fund our roads and mass transit.

How do you differentiate yourself from the other candidates?

Evers:  I'm the only candidate that's won three statewide races; I've been state Superintendent now for nearly 10 years.  I'll be able to start the first day -- there's no learning curve here.

In what areas do you think you're vulnerable?

Evers:  I don't think I have a vulnerability.

Marti was a reporter with WUWM from 1999 to 2021.
