Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Milwaukee has seen an increase in the number of incidents of gun violence.

It’s been a horrific year for the city of Milwaukee, according to the Office of Violence Prevention Director Reggie Moore. He says there’s been an increase in incidents with multiple victims of gun violence.

Moore spoke on a panel as part of the Democratic National Convention’s breakout session on gun violence. And when reflecting on the moment that we're in nationally, where communities are grappling with more comprehensive approaches to community safety, Moore says that his office is ahead of the curve.

“What it really comes down to is the courage, the commitment, and the will to actually invest the policies and resources necessary to make plans like the Blueprint for Peace a reality and to scale them to the degree that they need to,” says Moore.

He went on to say that the issue of gun violence is inextricably tied to issues of race.

“Based on the study that was released in 2019 by the Violence Policy Center, Wisconsin had the second-highest rate of Black homicide victimization in the country. So we have to look at gun violence and racial justice together,” he says.

While excited that the topic of gun violence was given a platform at the DNC, Moore says he’s eager to see what actions and investment will be made to address these issues.
