Dontre Hamilton Case: Protesters Crowd into City Hall

One person was arrested for disorderly conduct as demonstrators continued to call for charges in the police shooting death of Dontre Hamilton.

The protesters gathered at UW-Milwaukee and marched downtown Tuesday, stopping at Red Arrow Park before staging a sit-in at City Hall.

For months, Hamilton’s family and others have called for the district attorney to charge the former police officer who shot Hamilton. District Attorney John Chisholm says he plans to make a decision on the matter soon.

Hamilton was killed at Red Arrow Park in April, where he was resting when former officer Christopher Manney approached him. An altercation ensued, and Manney shot Hamilton 14 times, saying Hamilton had grabbed Manney’s baton and was using it to beat the officer.

Demonstrators also gathered this week outside Chisholm’s home and at the Milwaukee County Courthouse, as they have stepped up demands for criminal charges.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is making plans to meet with Hamilton’s family, in response to the protests.
