Serb Opposition
This is the final day of campaigning for the Bosnian elections to be held the day after tomorrow. From Sarajevo, NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports on the moderate opposition within the Bosnian Serb Republic. These are the Serbs whose power base is in northwestern Bosnia, far away from the nationalist stronghold in the eastern Bosnian town of Pale. Should these moderates win in this Saturday's elections, it is thought they they might be more willing to cooperate with implementing the joint instituions called for in the Dayton Peace Agreement.

South Africa Transition
NPR's Ann Cooper reports that South Africa is already making the transition to the post-Nelson Mandela era. The 78-year-old Mandela will be president until he retires in 1999, but Deputy President Thabo Mbeki has taken over much of the day-to-day running of the government. Many are fearful of a future without Mandela, but the president is laying the groundwork for a smooth transition by giving Mbeki more responsibility now. In addition, Mbeki is not expected to change many of Mandela's policies.

Linda talks with supercomputer expert Justin Rattner of the Intel Corporation in Portland, Oregon, about the news that Intel has developed a computer that can perform more than a trillion computations per second. They discuss what this means for the computer industry and how having computers that can calculate with a large number of variables might change day-to-day living...for example, it is possible that computers could now help accurately predict the weather.

Federal Reserve Tries To Get Credit Moving Again
The government announced Tuesday that it plans to buy huge amounts of short-term debts from companies. The Fed will buy "commercial paper," a short-term financing mechanism that many companies use to finance their day-to-day operations, like meeting payroll or purchasing supplies.
