Ex Fabula: Fatherhood

Katherine Schleicher
Jim Winship shares a story on-stage.

It’s another exciting month for ExFabula and we have some awesome events planned for the next two weeks. Our second Spanish language Storytelling Workshop will be held February 9. We believe that everyone has stories worth sharing, whether you speak English, Spanish or another language – so we’re very excited about elProyectoPuente (the Puente Project), which will build bridges (puentes) between the English and Spanish speaking communities in Milwaukee.

El ProyectoPuente is made possible because of the financial support of City of Milwaukee Arts Board, the Wisconsin Arts Board, and the UW-Milwaukee Cultures and Communities Program. The Puente Project includes four Spanish language Storytelling workshops, several volunteer orientations for bilingual event volunteers and a bilingual StorySlam on the theme of “American Dream / Sueño Americano."

We’re also very excited to be partnering with Panalure February 13 for a second year to deliver a special night of music and storytelling. The event, “Cabin Fever,” presents a new batch of songs and stories as an invitation to come in from the cold of the Wisconsin winter and reflect on what it means to hunker down and come inside, both physically and emotionally. Tickets are on sale now.

Vel Phillips: Establishing our Future, Garnering from the Past event

This week, in anticipation of our February 16 StorySlam,"Fatherhood," we’re featuring stories about fathers. Whether you have a father, are a father or have never known your father, we all have some story about fatherhood. During our 2015 event, "Vel Phillips: Establishing our Future, Garnering from the Past," Carlyle Chan shared the story of his father, a Chinese immigrant, who dreamed of his sons becoming doctors. Carlyle shares the dedication his father had for his sons’ education and the sacrifices he made in order to endure his sons would, indeed, become doctors.

Our second story comes from Jim Winship who shares the story of the first day after his father’s funeral. Jim and his brother embarked on a journey through Appalachian, to listen to music, to awe at their surroundings and the importance of being together.

Interested in volunteering for Ex Fabula? We’ll be holding a Volunteer Orientationon February 9. You are all welcome to attend, learn about Ex Fabula and see if volunteering with us is right for you.
