Be Wary of Scams as National Health Insurance Enrollment Period Approaches

On October first, Americans can begin enrolling in health insurance plans on the new federal exchange. Consumer advocates expect criminals to mislead people.

The National Consumers League predicts scammers will take advantage of confusion over the Affordable Care Act, by marketing phony insurance plans and convincing people to divulge confidential information, such as a social security number.

Under the ACA, people can sign up for insurance plans appearing on the new exchange, starting in October. Coverage will begin on January first, with premiums due in mid-December.

Wisconsin Medicaid Director Brett Davis is expected to roll-out information soon about the state exchange, particularly for the thousands of people the state will no longer cover.
