Choreographer Steven Koplowitz takes over two iconic Milwaukee locations to explore water through dance.
Two Milwaukee landmarks are the inspiration behind - and location of - two brand new performances by a world-renowned, award-winning choreographer.
Director Steven Koplowitz is premiering two large-scale, world premiere dances that are informed and inspired by water at these sites.
Summerdances are debuting at the North Point Water Tower and the Cudahy Gardens at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Koplowitz says the use of water in the pieces was inspired by Milwaukee’s ingrained relationship with water - both past and future.
Koplowitz worked closely with UWM dance professor Luc Vanier, composer Tim Russell, more than two dozen dancers, and members of the Bel Canto chorus for the pieces. He says he is interested in the human form and “how we as humans interact with the world."
"Site-specific work for me is one that pulls art into the world, into the town square and really forces the audience and the artists to think about what’s out there in the world," he says.
Summerdances are the concluding event of the Peck School of the Arts 50th anniversary season. The performances begin on June 13 and continue until June 15th.
