On Thursday, the Marquette Law School releaseda new statewide poll that found the impeachment hearings have not changed public opinion on whether President Donald Trump should be impeached.
According to the poll, 40% of registered voters in Wisconsin believe Trump should be impeached and removed from office, while 52% disagree. The poll's margin of error on the impeachment question is +/- 4.2 percentage points.
The last poll, released in November, showed 53% believed Trump should not be impeached.
This latest poll was conducted Dec. 3-8, 2019, after the public hearings held by the House Intelligence Committee.
The survey found public opinion in Wisconsin has not changed from November regarding whether Trump asked Ukraine to interfere with U.S. elections. Poll Director Charles Franklin says 52% of registered voters "believe Trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate Trump’s political rivals while 29% believe Trump did not do this."
Registered voters in Wisconsin are still split on Trump’s performance as president — 47% approve of the job he is doing and 50% disapprove.
When it comes to the Democrats who hope to unseat Trump in 2020, 23% of Democrats polled said former Vice President Joe Biden is their first choice. Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders came in second with 19%.
The poll also indicates that none of the Democratic presidential hopefuls would easily defeat Trump in Wisconsin, based on voters' current opinions. In November’s poll, New Jersey U.S. Sen. Cory Booker led Trump by 1 percentage point. Now, Booker is 1 percentage point lower than Trump. Biden has a 1 percentage point lead over Trump.
