A portion of I-94 will be closed from 11:00 p.m. Friday until 5:30 a.m. Monday.
The closure is in the Zoo Interchange, at Highway 100.
The state Department of Transportation says the weekend-long closure will enable workers to get a lot done in a relatively short time, instead of having to repeatedly close the freeway overnight.
DOT SE Freeways Construction Chief Ryan Luck says the work will include three separate projects in the vicinity. One is the erection of girders for a new railroad bridge.
“Girders for this large railroad bridge are 12’ high, very heavy, and require very large cranes to lift, erect and bolt. And then there’s numerous, numerous pieces of additional structural steel that get assembled and bolted into place, with thousands of bolts,” Luck says.
Luck says the other projects involve installing new concrete sewer pipes under the freeway, and demolishing an old highway bridge.
“You have three very large, complex operations going on around the clock this weekend and probably in excess of 100 men and also inspectors, lots of engineers trying to make it all go safe and efficiently and on schedule,” Luck says.
The Department of Transportation has detours planned, yet expects traffic backups and delays along the freeway segments approaching the closure.
