Slaughterhouses Often Face Meager Safety Violations, Critics Say
Hundreds of thousands of people go to work each day preparing the beef, pork and poultry that ends up on our dinner tables. Their workplace is among the most hazardous in the country. Slaughterhouses — while safer than they were decades ago — can exact a steep price from workers. As it tries to enforce safety rules, the government fines the businesses for violations, but one former official calls those fines ineffective and "embarrassingly low."

Cease-Fire In Gaza Reportedly Extended 24 Hours
The previous cease-fire lasted five days and expired at midnight. Unlike other deal extensions, there have been no reports of rockets fired or Israeli action. Talks continue with mediators in Egypt.

Radio History: March On Washington Recalled
Forty years ago Thursday, radio storyteller Jean Shepherd took a crowded bus from New York City to participate in the March on Washington. The next day, he went on the air and shared the experience from his perspective in the crowds. He had been surprised by the good-natured attitude of most of the demonstrators, and by how they had been received by regular people walking around in the city. We hear an excerpt from his broadcast of Aug. 29, 1963.

Volunteers Work To Save Homes, Businesses From Floods
At least 20,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday. Hundreds of blocks are submerged, threatening the city's drinking supply. Emergency officials expect it will be at least four days before water levels are low enough to get crews in pump out the excess water. About 200 homes are expected to have extensive damage due to the levee breach. Many of the same homes were also extensively damaged when the same levee broke in 1993. Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Weber talkes to volunteers of all ages, as they filled sandbags.

The Subject Of A Coast Guard Search Wasn't Missing After All
On Thanksgiving Day, people in New Jersey reported a kite surfer being carried out to sea. The Coast Guard looked for 16 hours. The surfer, who didn't know he was missing, called to say he was safe.
