Ex Fabula: A Labor Day Twist

It’s almost here! Ex Fabula Season 7 is just weeks away. We hope you’ve all enjoyed adventuresome, story-worthy summers because we want to see many new storytellers throughout this lucky seventh season! Our first Slam of the season will take us back to Garfield’s 502 on September 17th for a variety of stories on the theme “Come Clean.” This is your chance to air some dirty laundry or maybe cleanse your conscious. Not quite ready for the audience? Fret not. This fall, we’ll be offering two public storytelling workshopsto help you get those stories in shape and ready for the Ex Fabula stage.

This week on WUWM/Ex Fabula radio, we’re putting a twist on traditional Labor Day stories by sharing some anecdotes about the ladies who labored through hours (and hours) of childbirth. Yep, we’ve got some MOM stories for you.

Our first story comes from January 2015. Francie Szostak’s mom shared many pearls of wisdom throughout Francie’s childhood. Like most parents, having their children kidnapped was one of her mother’s greatest fears. However, Francie and her siblings weren’t taught passwords to fight stranger danger. They learned a much more effective strategy to escape child predators. While the siblings had a hardy laugh over the stranger danger defense, Francie had no idea the plan would work as well as an adult as it may ever have as a child.

Our second story comes from one of our Season 6 All-Stars, Molly Snyder. On the first day of second grade, Molly’s son discovered that he had his first male teacher. Enamored with this new male role model, her son peppered Molly with questions and anecdotes about Mr. Danny. When Molly’s son began asking his mom about Mr. Danny’s personal life, she found herself at a loss. “Mommy, is Mr. Danny married?” was a favorite question. Molly’s reply led to a very awkward encounter with Mr. Danny the following afternoon.

Hey, guess what? Ex Fabula needs volunteers. From day-of-event volunteers to board members and everything in between, we need your help. As a volunteer-driven non-profit organization, we rely on the support and dedication of community members to keep us existing and evolving. Volunteering for Ex Fabula is a fantastic networking opportunity allowing you to broaden your professional and social circles all while strengthening community bonds in this (often) fragmented city of ours.
