Milwaukee's Tallymoore Band - Tradition With a Twist

Bonnie North

The members of the Milwaukee band, Tallymoore, have been playing together for two years, this month.

They call themselves a contemporary folk band, and since that first performance have basically not paused for a second – working towards a goal of becoming Milwaukee’s go-to Irish band.

One of the things that distinguishes them is their strong vocals – all of them sing, and four of the six sing lead parts. Another is the appreciation and respect they bring to the traditional tunes they specialize in:

"It’s one of the brilliant things about some of these tunes, is that there’s so much history behind them, and you’ve heard so many different versions of it," says guitarist and singer Matt Voell. "We want to not only keep true to what the actual tune is about, but also put our own twist, and spin, and take on it."

They played three songs for us:

Fields_of_Athenry-Tallymoore_eopBNmt.mp3
Tallymoore - The Fields of Athenry
Queen_of_Argyll_-_Tallymoore.mp3
Tallymoore - Queen of Argyll
Go_Lassie_Go_-_Tallymoore.mp3
Tallymoore - Go, Lassie Go

Tallymoore will play at 'TosaTonight on Wednesday evening, and also at Irish Fest over the weekend.
