Radio Chipstone: Celebrating Fearlessness in 'Angels of Dirt'

Charlotte Kainz

Film Director Wendy Schneider says having a relationship with subjects and people who are involved in projects she's doing has to make sense to both her heart and spirit. As a director, she wants to satisfy the audience with the story and content she believes in and trusts.

About a year ago, her documentary Smart Studios premiered. The subject is a building in Madison that some "mistook for a crack house," but was actually an important center for the alternative music scene in Madison – and well beyond. Schneider’s work soon caught the attention of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Her latest documentary ten years in the making is called, Angels of Dirt. It's tells the story of professional flat track racer Charlotte Kainz. In this edition of Radio Chipstone, Schneider talks about the process of filmmaking and the fearlessness of the film’s heroine:

*There will be a fundraiser for Angels of Dirt at Fuel Cafe on October 10th. Three of Kainz's motorcycles will be on display and there will be a procession from the Harley Davidson Museum to Fuel Cafe. Kainz' father will lead the ride on the bike that she was riding at the time of her death.

Material culture contributor Gianofer Fields curates the Radio Chipstone series. The project is funded by the Chipstone Foundation, a decorative arts foundation whose mission is preserving and interpreting their collection, as well as stimulating research and education in the decorative arts.
