March is dedicated to celebrating the history and impact of great women and their achievements throughout the years. This month, Adam Carr has recognized five events to help us celebrate.
Carr is the deputy editor for community engagement at the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. The news organization covers the central city, which includes a diverse group of neighborhoods on the near north, west, and south sides of Milwaukee.
Here are Carr's highlights of a few events taking place in the central city this March:
1. Go see Eclipsed at the Milwaukee Rep
March 3 - 29
The play Eclipsed embarks on the journey of five extraordinary women, set in the midst of the Liberian civil war. In correlation to this event, the Milwaukee Rep will also be recognizing 12 local "SHEros," or female identifying hero's, for their excellence within the community.
"This is another opportunity to not just go to the play and get inspired, but the Milwaukee Rep is also helping uplift the stories of women locally who are also inspiring." says Carr.
2. The 2nd Annual César E. Chávez Birthday Celebration
March 8
Even though Chávez's real birthday is on March 31, this free event is a great way to get ready to celebrate and educate yourself about his life and legacy. There will be art and spoken word student competitions and the celebration will take place at the Marcus Center Downtown from 1-3 p.m..
3. 10th Annual Girls Day at City Hall
March 12
Each year, hundreds of Milwaukee middle and high school aged girls go to City Hall to learn about different careers within the public service industry. This event leads to workshops and leadership development opportunities to support young women interested in entering these industries.
"As it currently stands, three out of 15 of the seats in the Common Council are women and that's 20%, which is a lot less representative than the population at large," says Carr.
4. Tandem Pot Pi(e) Day With Venice Williams
March 14
If you're looking to geek out over Pi day but you're not the best with mathematical side of it all, feast your eyes on Pot Pi(e) day with community leader and chef, Venice Williams. There will be many pies to choose from — including chicken, vegan and vegetarian options.
"It is the best, gooiest, most delicious, soul-warming down to your toes kind of food possible," says Carr.
5. 5th Annual Swan Day
March 6 - April 3
Swan day is celebrated worldwide as is used as a way to celebrate female artists throughout different communities. Milwaukee will be celebrating the Swan Day exhibition, "Transformation Power," in two different locations: theMilwaukee Art Therapy Collectiveand the Bloom Center. It is a great way to get into making art and explore different women artists and creatives in Milwaukee.
"This gallery is actually running all month and on the 28th of March there will be two studio days at the galleries to meet the artists," notes Carr.
