Lovell, Marquette's First Lay Leader, Prepares for his First Day

Marquette University

The news this Spring that Michael Lovell would leave his role as Chancellor at UW-Milwaukee to become the next President of Marquette University stunned many in the Milwaukee community.

"It was not a perfect situation for everybody, but I think about things today," says Lovell.  "I feel like I’m in the right place.  And I think that hopefully, as time goes on, we’ll be able to have some really unique collaborations between Marquette and UWM that will make a big impact on Milwaukee."

Lovell had been widely praised for steering UWM through uncertain waters, and shepherding initiatives to solidify the campus as a research center.

When he takes over the presidency across town, Lovell will become the first lay leader in the university’s 133-year history.  That will become official on Tuesday July 1st.

As he gets ready to assume his new role, Lovell joined us from Zilber Hall on the Marquette campus to reflect on his time at UWM and look ahead.
