Milwaukee Rep Imagines A 'Pride and Prejudice' Sequel

Michael Brosilow
Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley is on stage at the Milwaukee Rep through December 16. Left to Right: Jordan Brodess, Margaret Ivey, Yousof Sultani, Rebecca Hurd, Deanna Myers, Fred Geyer, Sarai Rodriguez, Netta Walker.

Most of us know the titles: Sense and Sensibility. Emma. Pride and Prejudice.

And many of us have seen the Masterpiece Theatre or film adaptations of those novels. Who was your favorite Darcy?

But the play on stage at the Milwaukee Rep isn’t your typical Jane Austen adaptation. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, is actually not an adaptation at all but a modern play by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon that is a sequel to the events depicted in Pride and Prejudice.

"It is a little bit of a ‘what if?’ story," explains director Kimberly Senior, "in terms of who these characters are. And at its core it’s really a ‘who am I?’ play and understanding identity and female empowerment."

The play, which runs through December 16th, features a cast that includes Rebecca Hurd, who plays Mary Bennet, and who joined Senior on Lake Effect to talk about the production.
