Hip Hop DNA Explores the Evolution of Beatmaking and Sampling

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the birth of hip hop. In honor of the milestone, the Marcus Center is hosting Hip Hop DNA Volume I. The performance is exploring almost five decades of music and dance, and pays special attention to Milwaukee's own hip hop scene.

The list of participating Milwaukee musicians and performers is long and impressive, and includes local rapper Webster X. Musician Kiran Vedula, also known as Q the Sun, is producing the show and explains how the art form is the manifestation of our national ethos.

"Hip Hop is the true American Dream," Vedula says. "You can take Bach, then some Hugarian handclapping folk rhythm, and you can take Afro Cuban vocal and mix them all together through sampling. All these cultures can exist and cross influence each other."
